Day 22: Giorgio Moroder - From Here to Eternity

A futuristic-looking album cover of Giorgio Moroder with big sunglasses and a moustache

Today’s album choice was dictated by the fact that I had very little brain processing power and just wanted something good to jam out to while I do the Sisyphean task of the everything shower. You wash your hair, condition your hair, do a mask on your hair, and then you’re only halfway done and it’s onto your body routine. You emerge 45 minutes later, dehydrated, heat-exhausted and ready to lay down. Once you’ve recovered fully, it’s practically time to get back in there and do it again.

All of this to say, I had little energy and needed something to keep me engaged enough to push through what’s essentially a long period of bodily admin. I settled on Giorgio Moroder’s 1977 release From Here to Eternity.

Moroder is known as the Father of Disco. He produced legendary Donna Summers songs like “I Feel Love” and “Bad Girls” while also releasing a formidable catalogue of his own pioneering work that had a huge impact on dance music as a genre. In addition to this, he’s also done instantly recognisable film scores for movies like Scarface, Flashdance, Top Gun and The NeverEnding Story, as well as doing a controversial score for a restoration of the 1927 German sci-fi film Metropolis.

I still can’t get enough of synths, and From Here to Eternity luckily relies on simple, synth-heavy groovy music that is just pure fun. The lyrics and the arrangements aren’t overcomplicated or too busy, they’ve got enough space to breathe and the result is somehow magnetic. The simplicity of it makes it easy to fall into a flow state that overrides the tedium of doing something boring. Give me a bit of Giorgio and a can of Red Bull, the emails will write themselves.

There’s a certain category of album cover that I absolutely love, and this falls right into it. If you smashed a copy of this together with George Harrison’s “Cloud Nine” really hard, I’m pretty sure the world’s best album cover would spawn. I also love some of the song names almost as much as the songs: “Utopia – Me Giorgio” and “I’m Left, You’re Right, She’s Gone” are sublime.

I have failed to know enough about Giorgio Moroder. What’s even worse is that as a result, I have failed to put enough respect on his name. Giorgio rules. From Here to Eternity is an 8.5/10. My disgustingly long shower practically flew by.
