Day 223: Chase & Status - More Than Alot

Today’s album was a recommendation. “It was a big album at the time”, I was told. I thought, hmm, that makes us sound old, but then I realised this was released 18 years ago. 18 years! 2008 was 18 years ago. I get what the old-timers mean when they say time goes fast, that’s bonkers.

Today’s album is the charmingly misspelled More Than Alot by Chase & Status, an album that is regarded as somewhat of a drum n bass classic. Chase & Status consists of Saul Milton (Chase) and Will Kennard (Status) who formed the duo in 2003 when they were both students at the University of Manchester. They’re still going and as big as ever, having been nominated for Song of the Year and Best Dance Act at last year’s Brit Awards.

Considering how much of the album is dubstep-flavoured, the album is has aged astonishingly well – what is it that makes me think drum n bass is ageless but dubstep is strictly of its time? And I was not above it, by the way, if you were on the devil’s lettuce around 2009, you were most definitely listening to dubstep. But I don’t think I’d be too into it anymore.

Despite that, it’s a fun album to listen to. I like the ‘80s sounding “Running” and “Eastern Jam”, which became a big song at the time and got remixed with Snoop Dogg on the vocals. It’s a great album to drive to, albeit it would be easy to get a little bit carried away with it. I’m happy to have it on, but it’s not something that’s going into the rotation – it’s a 7.5/10.
