Day 237: Eagles - Eagles

Unbelievably, Scotland is warm. I’ve been getting too excited and deciding that it’s summer and I’ll be on the beach within the next two weeks. That, of course, is delusional, but a bit of delusion is necessary sometimes to keep morale. It’s an early late April start of the summer season, I’m calling it, it’s already time for the aforementioned Eagles Summer ’26.

I needed a good car album, the sun was shining, I was on my way to see some ancient sights, so I thought it was time to break out Eagles, the 1972 debut album of the Eagles. It was produced by Glyn Johns, who the band were courting because they liked the albums he’d produced for bands like the Beatles, Led Zeppelin and the Who. Johns went to see them live and deemed them too incohesive to want to work with them, but changed his mind after he later heard them singing harmonies.

If you’re looking for a driving album, this is as solid of a choice as it gets. The mellower songs like "Take It Easy" or "Peaceful Easy Feeling" are a little bit cheesy but I like them all the more for it, there’s just something about hearing these guys that makes me happy. And Eagles is no exception to that rule: it’s music for warm weather, a soundtrack to manning a barbecue grill, or just general good-time fodder. And there’s merit to the sort of dude rock that makes you feel nice and chilled out.

It’s an utility album and it serves its purpose extremely well. I said before that “I haven’t cultivated a lifestyle where I think, hey, maybe this moment would be better if I’d put on “Peaceful Easy Feeling”. I think that’s partially where I’m going wrong in life.” But that’s what I did today, it’s never too late to live your dreams. I’m giving it a 9/10.
