Day 253: Giorgio Moroder – Knights in White Satin

I’m experiencing a bit of the old Baader-Meinhof effect with Giorgio Moroder. A year ago, I didn’t even know who he was, and now it feels like he crops up often — whether its from film scores or his disco classics, he’s everywhere for me right now. And that’s no issue at all, I love a bit of the Giorgio, so today I thought I’d listen to him intentionally.

I covered the Father of Disco very early on in the project on Day 22, so I think we can skip the pleasantries. Knights in White Satin was released in 1976. It opens with a disco version of the Moody Blues song “Nights in White Satin”, except it’s “Knights in White Satin”, of course. And it is an album that has… I guess, a lot of passion to it.

This is probably my fourth horny album in a row and I swear I’m not doing this on purpose, it feels like I’m trying to announce to the world that I’m randy, I’m honestly not. It’s not something that I’m consciously doing, but to be fair I have read enough Jung to know that I should maybe ponder this a bit. Anyway, with Knights in White Satin, I’ve accidentally chosen an album that’s almost amusingly horny.

As I said a few days ago, it’s easy for a sex album to age in a way where it becomes a comedy album, and as sure as I am that Mr. Moroder is presenting his songs with a wink and a nudge, it’s still a bit much. In “Oh L’amour” he’s singing about wanting to go again and growling “c’est bon” in a way I haven’t heard since the Countess released “Chic, C’est La Vie”, but the main culprit is “I Wanna Funk with You Tonite”. Giorgio’s singing partner is moaning and working quite hard to de-emphasise the ‘n’ in funk.

This is very hard for me to rank because with a 2026 POV it’s a bit more tongue-in-cheek than Giorgio Moroder intended, and yet I do find myself liking it. Despite the grunts and whatnot, the songs are actually fun and catchy, and at every moment I’m bobbing my head, if not shaking other body parts. But the lyrics are… well. Here they are, courtesy of AZLyrics:

I wanna funk with you tonite
Come on baby, let's funk tonite
So come on babe, tonight's the nite
Yeah that's rite, tonight's the nite

I wanna funk with you tonite
I wanna funk with you tonite
I wanna funk with you tonite
Huuu huuuu huuu

I wanna funk with you tonite
I wanna funk with you tonite
I wanna funk with you tonite
Haaah aaaah aaaaaaaaaaaaaah

I don’t really know what to say here, I’ll just let the work speak for itself. It’s a slightly hesitant 7/10. I guess even geniuses have their moments.
