Day 270: Chic – Chic

Short one today. Scotland has qualified for the football world cup for the first time since 1998 and I’ve been watching them play Bolivia tonight. That’s not the reason I’m keeping it short, I’m not even a football fan, but I have enjoyed some Fireball – the less I say, the better.

To keep things concise, I thought I’d go for a band I’ve already covered in the past. Tonight, that’ll be Chic. I wrote about them very early on in this project on day 30, plus I’m seeing Nile Rogers & Chic live in a couple of weeks, so I need to brush up.

Chic was released as the group’s debut album in 1977. It opens with “Dance, Dance, Dance (Yowsah, Yowsah, Yowsah)", which has two notable things about it, the first one being the use of the word yowsah, which you don’t hear very often and we should consider bringing back into regular use. The second one is that the background vocals are provided by Luther Vandross. From there, you sort of know what you’re in for: high-quality disco music that makes you want to get up and have a good time.

It’s an album of sleek and sexy disco with Euro-dance and soul influences that is a joy to listen to – try to have a bad time while listening to “Everybody Dance”, surely even the surliest person would enjoy it. It’s not as good as my previously reviewed Risqué and I have the same gripe as I did with that one, thinking that the ballads are the weakest link, but it’s still a fun listen and I can’t wait to see them live. 8.5/10.
