Day 390: Lime – Your Love

We’ve once again reached the best day of the week, it’s Disco Friday! Today, I thought I’d explore a bit more of Hi-NRG disco, as inspired by a previous Disco Friday where I delved into the work of Patrick Cowley, so I thought I should listen to a Canadian disco duo who I haven’t heard before called Lime.

Lime was formed in 1980 in Quebec, consisting of a married couple called Denis and Denyse LePage. The pair had met at a dance hall when they were 16, and they decided to start making disco music together when they were in their 30s – the pair had both been working as session musicians, but they decided to start a disco act when there wasn’t enough work for them. Apparently there was a rumour at the time that Lime was one person pretending to be two people by doing two different voices, but that wasn’t true, although it would have been fun if it was.

Their debut album Your Love was released in 1981, and the titular single reached the top of the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart. It’s definitely an interesting album. The lyrics are so clunky that I was genuinely surprised to read that the pair are from Canada, and Denyse sings at the very top of her register in a way that just goes straight through me, and not in a good way. That being said, the instrumentals are great, and the sharp and pulsating sound is fun to listen to, but unfortunately it’s not really good enough to let you get past its more obvious shortcomings.

Will I listen to this again? No, but I don’t regret hearing it. It’s kind of fun and I could see it growing on me if I let it, but I don’t really see much reason to listen to it enough for it to start sounding better. It’s fine, it’s got its good parts and its bad parts, it’s a 6.5/10.
