Day 394: Slayyyter – WOR$T GIRL IN AMERICA

OK, as some of you may have noticed, I’ve made a few changes to the site. I was originally going to migrate everything to a different platform where the website would be a bit more professional-looking and with built-in ways to monetise it, but it just didn’t feel right – this may be a slightly crappy little website, but it’s my crappy little website. And I don’t know, I just feel like it goes against the spirit of the project to start trying to make ad money. Maybe at some stage, but for now I just want this to be fun.

However, I’m going to keep on testing ways to make this website look a bit nicer and increase readability. I’ll also be adding some links at the end for you to be able to click and access the album on Spotify and Apple Music. The big change is that I’m going to try to get a weekly newsletter going, with little summaries of rankings and links to the reviews. I was originally going to make it a daily newsletter, but then I subscribed to a daily newsletter, and it’s just a lot to get an email every day, I don’t expect you to like that.

Anyway, that’s the admin done, if you have any suggestions from a reader’s perspective, my inbox is always open. On to the album, which today will be Slayyyter.

Slayyyter, or Catherine Grace Garner, is a singer and songwriter from Missouri who started making a name for herself by releasing her music on Soundcloud in 2016 when she was working as a receptionist at a hair salon. She’s slowly built a strong fanbase online and has released three albums, a mixtape and an EP, but she didn’t really reach mainstream fame until she released her third album, WOR$T GIRL IN AMERICA, in March 2026.

It’s just so nice to know that someone released their breakout pop album at 30. You can hear that she remembers the same music that I grew up with, but she still sounds very current – I think she took those influences and ran with them but made them sound modern in a way that deserves praise.  And it still scratches that little nostalgia itch that I have for 2000s acts like Crystal Castles and Justice. And lyrically it’s also a bit of a throwback with its sleazebag hedonistic party themes, which is just refreshing to hear, I like that we’re finally culturally moving away from tradwifery and moral puritanism.

However, the album suffers a bit from the opener “DANCE…”, which propelled her into the mainstream when it went viral on TikTok, being one of the strongest songs on the album, followed by the equally good “BEAT UP CHANEL$”. I was very excited after I heard those, and while the rest of the album isn’t bad by any means, most of it just doesn’t reach that level and the momentum dies a little bit along the way. But all in all, it’s still a solid album of modern electropop, it’s not necessarily great the whole way through but it’s always good.

Slayyyter does sesh gremlin music for the modern age, and she does it well. She’s even doing the dollar sign ‘S’, it really warms the cockles to see someone so wholeheartedly embrace the 2010s party aesthetic a la greats like Kesha – frankly I’m surprised this renaissance didn’t happen earlier, I can’t believe the kids are coping with horrible times by doing reformer pilates and skincare. Slayyyter kind of feels like the antidote to that.

She’s definitely an artist whose work I’ll follow, but it’s probably not an album I’ll listen to again. WOR$T GIRL IN AMERICA is a solid 7.5/10.
