Day 303: Cerrone – Love in C Minor

It’s kind of disco Friday for me today, by which I mean that it’s Tuesday but my holiday started and I’m having red wine. Because of this, I thought I’d continue exploring the back catalogue of Cerrone by listening to his debut, Love in C Minor.

Cerrone is by far one of my favourite artists I’ve discovered throughout this project and I’ve written about him on days 244, 250 and 285, so I’ll skip the background on him this time. Love in C Minor was released in 1976 as Cerrone’s first solo release after his previously reviewed collaborative project with the band Kongas.

Love in C Minor is, as expected, full of catchy floorfillers, but it’s definitely an album that you need to listen to with the windows closed. The first song starts off with a spoken word section of a group of ladies hashing out some sort of sexual logistics and ends with very ecstatic moaning  – really, I would expect nothing less, but it means that it’s best enjoyed in a semi-private setting.

Despite the somewhat pornographic nature of the record, it’s still something you want to listen to when you want to have a nice day and I could see it being the best possible album to clean or do other chores to. But obviously the number one thing you’d like to do to this music is dance. It’s an album so good it’s making me consider finding a local disco night, or maybe hitting up my local roller rink – disco is so good, it should be experienced as collective joy.

There’s a reason why I love this guy, and it’s because he’s one of the best to ever do it. Love in C Minor isn’t Cerrone’s finest work, but it’s still fun and I could see myself going back to it. There’s something charmingly camp about the sexuality of songs like these, almost to the point where it’s just not really that sexual anymore. Love in C Minor is fun, it’s a solid 8.5/10. Can’t we just have that disco revival already? I just think we need it.
