Day 304: Pitbull – Planet Pit
It’s finally time: I’m going to see Pitbull tonight. Obviously I’ll be in full costume and boy howdy was I not prepared for how bad I look in a bald cap, I’ve never realised how much heavy lifting my hair is doing for me. I just hope I never lose my hair now, I just don’t have the face to carry my big head without it. Anyway, today’s pregame album will obviously be by the big man himself, and it’s his 2011 classic, Planet Pit.
Pitbull probably needs no introduction, or at least that’s what I tell myself because I am once again a bit short on time. Planet Pit was his sixth studio album, and it contains some of his biggest hits, like “Hotel Room Service”, “I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho)” and “Rain Over Me”, and it has a star-studded features list with artists like Ne-Yo, Kelly Rowland, T-Pain and Enrique Iglesias.
Planet Pit is a great example of Pitbull being at his best: he does hedonistic party songs that remind you to seize the moment and have fun, preferably surrounded by ladies with large behinds, with little nuggets of wisdom peppered in. He’s like a slightly scuzzy Miami life coach who would definitely try to bang your wife but will help with your mental health, like on “Give Me Everything” where he first encourages you to “Reach for the stars, and if you don't grab them, at least you'll fall on top of the world” and follows it up with “Think about it, 'cause if you slip, I'm gon' fall on top of your girl”. You know what, Pitbull, sure.
However, there’s one big stinker on this album that even I can’t justify. “Something for the DJs” is atrocious, there’s no way around it. I’ve heard it before and even then I remember thinking this might be one of the worst things ever made, but I blissfully blocked that memory and got to re-discover it. It’s almost hard to believe that he, Afrojack and David Guetta all got together and went yeah that’s fine, release it, no issues with the pre-chorus. Here’s the pre-chorus:
If you're sexy and you know it clap your hands
If you're sexy and you know it clap your hands
If you're sexy and you know it and you really wanna show it
If you're sexy and you know it clap your hands
But I guess even masters have bad days. It’s an 8/10, there’s some of the best songs and some of the worst songs, I bet they’ll all still sound great live. I also think it’s very funny that Afrojack and David Guetta are not listed as features on that song.
